"Mutamba" is a traditional mbira song, often played on mavembe/gandanga tuning, but there have not been many, if any, marimba arrangements thus far. This arrangement, part of which Ande debuted at Zimfest 2013, is for advanced players, and it showcases how one song can be heard in many ways depending on where the cycle starts. The first section is in a major mode, but as the song develops, the first beat will move from one point in the cycle to another, thus shifting the entire "feel" of the song and putting it in a minor mode, all without changing the chord progression!

Session 6 (Sun 1:00 PM) 2 hours

"Tondori" is a song that many people know and love. Kutandara Center first learned it from Sheasby Matiure. Randy McIntosh was inspired by what he learned from Sheasby, and decided to put his own twist on it by moving the piece to a minor key and adding a higher level of difficulty to the parts. That is the version this workshop will teach. The song also has a unison break that everyone will learn together.

Topics: Marimba, Hosho

Session Length
Session 6 (Sun 1:00 PM) 2 hours

You want some hard marimba? OK, you asked for it! This is a traditional matepe song with the fingering parts put directly onto the marimbas. The matepe really is like two little marimbas right in your hands, and I'll show you that. I'll have my matepe there, and we'll pull the melodies right off. This is the way they play marimba in some of the Tonga areas and in Mozambique. There is a lot of split octave playing that is unique to this style. It's nice to learn a new way of doing things, isn't it? Oh yeah, the hosho style is completely different, too.

Learn the jiti rhythm by playing the song "Vana Kuhondo" ("Sending Children to War"). This is one of Thomas Mapfumo's all-time greats. It has a very appealing baritone melody that cements the power of jiti rhythm to listeners, and gives an outstanding identity to the blend of traditional and jiti rhythms. This song identifies with Zimbabwean cultural musical arts and insists on the aspects of polyphony on the sopranos and polyrhythmic conversations on the tenors.

This is one of Alport Mhlanga's most well-known compositions. The title is a Ndebele word meaning "The Sound of Frogs." This is an atmospheric piece where each marimba represents the different timbres of a frog chorus pulsing in the evening. Some frogs provide a drone while others pulse back and forth between two "chords." MyLinda will teach the arrangement of this song originally envisioned by the composer, which is not the version usually performed and recorded.

Skill Levels: Advanced Advanced

Session Length
Session 5 (Sat 3:30 PM) 2 hours

"Vamuroyi" ("The Witch") is a song that is very rich in musical structure. The sopranos concentrate on the call melodies in double polyphonic harmonizing lines, which gives a rich leading, calling (kushaura) sound in some instances in the composition. The tenors also play short melodic structures in some instances, but concentrate more on the answering polyrhythmic patterns. The baritone on this song is a joy to listen to and commanding in its overall sound. If you want to challenge yourself to play something fast, sweet and bouncy in mhande style rhythm, you don't want to miss this workshop.

The lyrics are "Kashiri kamambo, Kangaka chamhedza; Nhengeni / Mutengeni" which means "The small bird of the king might swallow the nhengeni, the fruit of the mutengeni tree." Jenaguru members are very excited about this song, as it has become one of the most driving, danceable songs in our set list and makes us very happy. Key of G; ionian mode (uses F#s). Skill Levels: Intermediate Intermediate

Topics: Marimba, Drumming

Session Length
Session 7 (Sun 3:30 PM) 2 hours

"Imbwa Yangu Machena" is one of those songs that people in Zimbabwe LOVE to dance to! Maybe it's because it translates to "My White Dog" and there's nothing funnier than seeing a white guy play it! In any case, this song rocks and is super funky! I've seen a lot of folks teach this over the years, so why learn this version? This version is coming right off the mbira as played by Matemai and taught to me over a year and a half of living with him. The sopranos are working the kushaura hard, and the baritone handles the main theme of the tune, while the bass rocks out on the kutsinhira (just like Matemai's mbira playing!). Get ready for a workout! We'll also touch on some of the drumming (this is a drumming song after all!).

Nhemamusasa: An Introduction for Music Teachers (more)

Cost: $30.00

Age Levels: Adults

Skill Levels: Advanced Beginner Advanced Beginner

Topics: Marimba, Singing, Workshops for Teachers

Session Length
Session 3 (Fri 3:30 PM) 2 hours

The mbira piece "Nhemamusasa" is sometimes thought of as a song that's too advanced for beginners or children, yet children in Zimbabwe sing this song while playing games. It's a great introduction to mbira-style music and the culture surrounding it. In this workshop, I (Wanda) will teach educators how to present this song to people of any age who are new to this style of music. Classic singing lines, taught first, become the foundation for the marimba parts and how to hook them. The arrangement begins with a clapping and singing game which teaches the connection between the two interweaving lines.
