Volunteer Shifts

The Zimbabwean Music Festival is made possible through the charitable contributions of time and stewardship of many generous volunteers. This page lists all of the volunteer shifts at the festival this year. The shifts are organized into task groups. You may jump to a particular gropu by selecting one of the group links below.

Registration

Festival Checkin
(General)
This person welcomes everyone at the registration desk, gives them their packet (if there are no changes or questions) and makes sure they are signed up for a volunteer job. Reports to Registration non-tech Lead.
Computer Assist
(General)
This person assists people who need to register for workshops, buy concert tickets or sign up for volunteer jobs. Must be friendly, organized and have good people skills. Reports to Registration Tech Lead.
Workshop computer assist
(General)
Coordinate Workshop Evaluations: Prepare evaluation packets for all workshops for teachers to pick up prior to each session; ensure packets get to all classrooms on time (deliver if not picked up); collect each days evaluations after last session each day (F, S, Su, 5:30 pm) from every classroom, clip each classes' forms together, and put in the box provided at registration. Work at Registration desk; walk to and from all classrooms, as needed to complete tasks. Reports to Registration non-tech Lead.

Workshops

Workshop Instrument Mover
(General)
This person will help move instruments from vehicles to classrooms for set-up on Wednesday and Thursday. This person will also help move instruments from classrooms back into vehicles for take-down on Sunday and Monday morning. Must be physically able to manage large and bulky instruments. Supervised by Onsite Instrument Mover LEAD.
Workshop Needs
(General)
This person will work with the Workshop Coordinator to move mbiras and drums and/or any other requested equipment needed for teaching before each workshop. This person will also let students into locked buildings for their workshops. Reports to Workshop Coordinator.

Afternoon Stage

Afternoon stagehand
(General)
This person moves instruments (mostly marimbas) to and from the afternoon stage. The moving can be to and from vehicles or classrooms - other people doing this will be performers. This person also helps the afternoon stage manager with any set-up or break-down tasks. Reports to Afternoon Stage Manager.
Green Tent Staff
(General)
This person supports the musicians performing at the afternoon stage by providing water and assisting with stage set-up when needed. This person may also be asked to help move instruments between sets. Reports to Afternoon Stage Manager.

Evening Stage

Door and Tickets
(General)
This person will collect all tickets for people going into the evening concerts. This person will also sell tickets to those who do not have them. An accounting sheet must be kept showing all tickets sold and prices charged and money must be kept in the cash box and secured at all times. Reports to House Manager.
Evening stagehand
(General)
This person moves instruments (mostly marimbas) to the back of the evening stage prior to the concert. This person also assists in moving instruments between sets during the evening concert. After the concert is over, this person helps to move instruments back to vehicles, classrooms or backstage. Reports to the Concert Production Manager.
Evening Green Room
(General)
This person will assist the Green Room Coordinator with bringing food/beverages into the room and helping to keep the room cleaned up during and after the concert. This person will also assist getting any left-over food/beverages moved to the Mbira Gathering after the concert. Reports to Green Room Coordinator.
Evening Zimfest Table
(General)
This person will be responsible for selling Zimfest t-shirts and posters. An accounting sheet must be kept detailing all sales and money received, and money will be kept in the cash box and secured at all times. This person will also help with the job of Door and Tickets when necessary. Reports to Zim Booth Manager.
Evening stage security
(General)
This person will control all doors into the auditorium and backstage for the evening concerts. No one will be allowed in the backstage area without a pass. Reports to the Concert Production Manager.

Marketplace
Group Shifts: Show Hide

Marketplace takedown
(General)
This person will assist vendors take down their booths and move their goods into the locked storage area at the end of Market Hours (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Must be able to help move large or heavy objects. Reports to Marketplace Coordinator.
Marketplace Zimfest Booth
(General)
This person will help sell Zimfest t-shirts, posters and cold drinks at the Zimfest Booth. An accounting sheet must be kept detailing all sales and money received, and money will be kept in the cash box and secured at all times. Reports to Zimfest Booth Manager.
Marketplace storage
(General)
This person will assist vendors who arrive on Thursday to put their goods into the locked storage area. Must be able to help move large or heavy objects. Reports to Marketplace Coordinator.
Marketplace setup
(General)
This person will assist vendors with setting up their booths in the morning (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Must be able to help move large or heavy objects. Reports to Marketplace Coordinator.

Misc
Group Shifts: Show Hide

Evening concert decorations
(General)
This person will help set up decorations for the evening concerts Thursday through Sunday. This person will also help to take down the decorations at the end of the concert on Sunday night. Reports to Festival Coordinator.
General set up and clean up
(General)
This person will be available to help with jobs previously not assigned in preparation for the start of the festival on Thursday. This person will also help with general clean-up or dismantling after the festival ends on Monday morning. Reports to Volunteer Coordinator.
Marketplace Decoration set up and take down
(General)
This person will help put together the decorative banners and place them around the marketplace Friday morning. The same signage will be taken down Sunday afternoon. Reports to Marketplace Coordinator.
Signage Set Up and Clean Up
(General)
This person helps to put together and place directional posters and signs around campus on Thursday to help navigate attendees around campus efficiently. Same signs need to be taken down Monday morning. Reports to Volunteer Coordinator.
