News

May 17, 2014 — Online Registration Open!

May 21, 2014 — We have had a tremendous response since Zimfest registration went live! Some of our workshops are already filling up, and we are pleased to announce that Patience Musandirire has agreed to teach a second session of one of his marimba workshops; see announcements of this and all future workshop changes below. The good news from Zimbabwe is that Patience has been granted his US visa, as has Sheasby Matiure. Unfortunately, Bulawayo dancer Caroline Mangwiro will not be joining us for Zimfest 2014 as her visa application has been denied. We have cancelled Caroline's dance workshops, and will let you know in the coming weeks if we add any additional dance classes.

Our new Zimfest PASS is proving to be popular. We apologize for any registration quirks regarding the PASS - thanks for your patience! If you would like to purchase the all-inclusive Zimfest PASS, our advice is to register for it first, as soon as you add yourself as a participant. You do not need to sign up for concert tickets as they are included, but you do need to sign up for your chosen workshops.

June 21, 2014 — We regretfully announce that Selmor Mtukudzi and her Trio will not be with us at Zimfest 2014. We look forward to hosting them another year. We are happy to confirm that Jimu Makurumbandi will be performing as well as teaching at the festival in their place. Jimu, a multi-talented musician and dance specialist from Mbare, is currently in Seattle on a one-year dance residency. We will be scheduling new workshops to be taught by Jimu and others very soon - check below for workshop additions.

Don't forget that June 23 is the last day to register for guaranteed housing at Zimfest 2014!

June 25, 2014 — Moved Moyo Mutamba's popular Makwa (Clapping) workshop to the Presentations room and increased the maximum number of participants to 30 so there are 10 more spaces! Click here for more information.

June 29, 2014 — Changed Kurai Mubaiwa's Chipembere (INTENSIVE) workshop from two sessions to a single session of 2.5 hours to take place on July 25 only. Click here for more information.

July 11, 2014 — We are sorry to inform you that Julia Chigamba and the Chinyakare Dance Ensemble will not be with us this year. We will miss them and hope it can work out in the next year to have them back at Zimfest. We are very lucky, however, that some old friends are in the area and will be available to take Chinyakare's performance spot. We are happy to announce the return of Bongo Love to the Zimfest Stage! Bongo Love has added two new performers to their lineup and have been wowing audiences up and down the West Coast. We look forward to having them! Without Julia, we have had to cancel the Mauya Mauya workshop—that will have to wait until Julia returns to Zimfest. The Dinhe Dance workshop she was going to teach is now in the capable hands (and feet) of Jimu Makurumbandi. Click here for more information.

Today is two weeks before the start of Zimfest 2014, and at this time we cancel workshops with enrollments of less than two. If you were registered for a workshop that has been canceled, your account will be credited with the cost of the workshop. You may apply the credit towards another workshop. If you do not use the credit by the end of the festival, you may request a refund, or choose to donate the money to the Zimfest Association. Canceled workshops are shown in the list below.

July 14, 2014 — Increased maximum number of spaces in Kurai Mubaiwa's Hosho workshop to 12 students. Click here for more information.
